When’s the Best Time to Visit Rottnest? Month-by-Month Guide

Planning a trip to Rottnest Island? The good news is, there’s no bad time to visit. But depending on what you want to see or do - snorkelling, cycling, whale watching or avoiding crowds - some months are better than others. Here’s a quick breakdown of what to expect throughout the year.

January to March: Peak Summer

·       Weather: Hot, dry and sunny (30°C+)

·       Water temp: Warm and crystal clear

·       Activities: Snorkelling, cycling, beach days, sunset drinks

·       Crowds: Very busy, especially during school holidays and long weekends

Top Tip: Book your ferry and bike hire well in advance.

April to May: Autumn Calm

·       Weather: Warm days and cooler nights

·       Activities: Less crowded snorkelling spots, cycling, local events, bus tours

·       Wildlife: Start of whale sightings offshore (late May)

·       Events: Anzac Day and Easter can bring brief crowds

Why go now? The heat settles down but the water stays warm. Great for couples and relaxed travellers.

June to August: Quiet & Cosy Winters

·       Weather: Cooler (highs of 18°C), windy, and occasional showers

·       Activities: Scenic walks, history tours, cosy pub lunches

·       Crowds: Low season, peaceful and slow-paced

Good to know: Not ideal for swimming, but great for deals on accommodation.

September to October: Spring Bloom & Baby Quokkas

·       Weather: Mild and sunny, with the island in full bloom

·       Wildlife: Baby quokkas (joeys) emerge from their mums’ pouches and wildflower season

·       Activities: Perfect for cycling, photography and island tours

Bonus: October is when the island’s iconic native daisy starts to flower, the Wadjemup Daisy.

November to December: The Build-Up to Summer

·       Weather: Warming up with longer days

·       Events: Leavers Week (mid to late November), festive season buzz

·       Activities: Swimming, snorkelling, casual dining, Christmas picnics

Heads up: If you’re not into the Leavers crowd, aim for early November or post-school holidays.

So, When Should You Go?

·       Best for beach time: January to March

·       Best for budget & quiet: June to August

·       Best for nature & wildlife: September to October

·       Best all-rounder: April and May (fewer crowds, good weather)
