July School Holidays Sorted With Rottnest

If you’re a parent and your kids are on school holidays, you probably hear this question every single morning. During the school term, they get so used to the teachers planning each part of their day, and now that school’s out, they’re looking to you to do the same.
In Perth’s summer months, it’s relatively easy to come up with daily activities, but when it comes to the winter break, it can be far more challenging to find things for the kids to do. Wouldn’t it be nice if someone could just hand you a list of family-friendly activities that could keep the kids occupied for a day or two?
Well, luckily for you, we’ve done just that! While it may not be traditional beach weather at this time of year, there’s still so much to see and do on Rottnest Island. Camp Or Glamp
There’s nothing quite like a family camping trip! From putting up the tents to sitting around playing games, there’s so many opportunities to bond together as a family. Rottnest Island offers a well-equipped campsite close to the Main Settlement, so you can get the full camping experience while still being within easy reach of all necessary resources and supplies.
Not much of a camper? Not to worry, the Island offers a wide range of other accommodation types, with a variety of affordable cabins and luxury chalets available. Even if you choose to go down the glamping route, you can still disconnect from the world and reconnect with the family. Put the technology away and break out the puzzles and board games. You could even do a Will & Grace and try your hand at charades.
Take a Look Around
With so much natural beauty on offer, you’d be crazy not to take a tour of the Island and enjoy all the sights. You can travel around Rottnest via almost any mode of transportation, with options to suit kids of any age. For those with youngsters, you can tour Rottnest Island via a scenic bus tour, or if your little ones are a bit more adventurous, you could cycle around the island or even take a sail boat ride across the crystal-clear waters. If your kids are 12 and over, you could also jump on a Segway tour.

Gone Fishin’
Swimming might not be on the cards on days when the temperature drops a little too far, but when it’s too cool to jump in the water, you can still head out on a fishing boat. With so many sheltered beaches and coves, there are plenty of spots around Rottnest Island that are ideal for fishing during winter. You can hire a boat from Boating West and either buy or rent fishing gear from Rottnest Island Bike & Hire.
Spot The Quokka
No trip to Rottnest Island is complete without sighting a quokka or five. Older kids will probably be more interested in getting a selfie, but the younger ones are bound to enjoy exploring the island to look for quokkas and see how many they can find!
Beach Discovery & Pirate Pete
Each time the school holidays roll around, Rottnest Island puts together a program of activities to help keep the kids entertained. This winter the program offers Beach Discovery, an educational tour that takes the kids beachcombing, and Pirate Peter, a comedy act that engages the kids in a treasure hunt around the Island.

I Scream, You Scream We All Scream For Ice Cream
Who doesn’t love ice cream? Simmo’s Ice Creamery was rated one of the top 15 ice creameries in the world by USA Today, and it’s easy to see why! The locally made ice cream comes in a wide range of imaginative flavours that are sure to tickle the fancy of even the fussiest eaters. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants all over the Island that offer delicious items on the kids’ menu.
Mini Golf & Movies
Golf, anyone? The Rottnest Island Family Fun Park has an 18-hole mini golf course that can get all in the family involved. There’s also an 80’s themed arcade that will make mum and dad all nostalgic. Complete with pinball machines, Pac-man, Space Invaders and air hockey, there’s plenty of fun to be had. Afterwards, you can settle in for one of the latest blockbusters at Rottnest Island Movies.
Night Skies & Ghost Stories
The Rottnest Island July 2019 School Holiday Program also has a selection of night-time activities. As the names suggests, Night Skies is a star-gazing tour where you’ll hear all about the planets, and Ghost, Myths & Legends involves an interactive tour around the Main Settlement by torchlight.
